Ben Faro

Melbourne, VIC

I cut my teeth at the age of 5, fishing scrub worms for trout on the banks of Lake Eildon. It was those family camping trips that sparked a passion that has been with me ever since.

In 2008 I purchased my first ever kayak… a Native Watercraft Ultimate 12 Propel which took my passion for fishing and turned it into an obsession! All of a sudden there was no piece of water that was off limits and I found myself catching fish in places I’d never dreamed possible.

I’m pretty happy catching anything with fins nowadays, but spend most of my time fly and lure fishing for estuary perch, bream and snapper. I also have a love for Australian native fish and regularly find myself drifting a river in NSW, fishing for bass or throwing spinnerbaits and hard bodies for Murray cod and golden perch.

I also enjoy the odd tournament and fish the Victorian rounds of the Bass Nation Australia kayak tournament and some rounds of the Central Vic Lure Casters Super Series.

Fishing has always been in my life, but it only “took over” in 2007. Since that first all womens barramundi tournament in the crocodile-dominated waters of Australia’s Top End, I’ve been addicted.

Having now shunned my corporate suit and closed my fancy-pants advertising agency, I focus entirely on fishing and fishing-related business. I’ve followed my lures all over Australia and further afield, casting flies or conventional lures at fish in New Zealand, Timor Leste, Cook Islands and Indonesia.

Hailing from Darwin in the Northern Territory of Oz, kayak fishing was never on my radar due to my respectful wish to stay as far away from the crocodiles as possible. However, two years ago saw me relocate to the more hospitable waterways of the far south coast of New South Wales and thus, my kayak fishing adventure began! Whilst there are no barra down in these safer waters, there are plenty of other species to keep me constantly challenged and inspired.

You can keep up with my adventures and connect with me on my Fishingscool page on Facebook.

Michael Maas

Gold Coast, QLD

I’m an angler with 12 years tournament experience living on the Gold Coast, Australia. I compete in both the Hobie Kayak Bream Series and ABT Bream Series (Australian Bream Tournaments). The 2014 Kayak Bream Series was a successful year for me, with a podium finish of 3rd in the National Grand Final, a 2014 ranking of 4th and a AOY (Angler Of Year) ranking of 5th. My achievements to date have also included placing 2nd overall in the Hobie Bream National Grand Final (narrowly missing out on a 1st placing by 40 grams).

I also compete in a powerboat in the ABT Bream Series and have enjoyed much success over the last 12 years. While it’s great to fish out of a boat, I am equally passionate about kayak fishing in all its simplicity. My aim is to compete at the highest level in Australian tournament fishing in the AFC (Australian Fishing Championships), and I aspire to achieve the number 1 ranking.

I’m currently sponsored by Searing tackle (www.searingtackle.com.au) as part of their Pro Staff team. Here, you can find my profile and tournament results listed from 2004 through to the success of the 2014 session. I’ve included a few other interesting links for you to check out as well…

Jesse Hommelhoff

Melbourne, VIC

My fishing career began in South Australia where I lived until the age of twelve, I was taught the basics of how to fish by my family (mainly my father, uncle and grandfather), fishing for species such as squid, garfish, mullet, tommy ruff and carp.

After moving to Victoria at the age of 12, I began to work more on my fishing, studying species and learning as much as I could about fishing to better my chances. I started lure fishing and loved it, targeting fish such as redfin, Australian salmon and snook.

After a few years practice, I broadened my horizons and began fishing in various other styles, including surf fishing, fly fishing and kayak fishing. I now have a much larger range of species under my belt that includes trout, mulloway, snapper and gummy shark.

I’m a co-host of Oz Fish TV alongside Michael Delmarco and Chris Monnier. This is really what started my kayaking trips. I’m fairly new to kayaking but feel very at home in a ’yak… It allows me to get further in to the river systems and target snags from angles that are much more productive than simply casting from a bank. However, I still focus heavily on land-based fishing as I cherish the satisfaction and reward of catching an awesome fish from nothing but dry land.

Michael Del Marco in his Native Watercraft Slayer.

Michael Del Marco

Melbourne, VIC

I grew up fishing the Gippsland Lakes and the 90 Mile Beach, catching my first fish when I was 3 years old. Since then, I’ve never looked back, fishing almost every pier in Melbourne. I’ve always had a major passion for surf fishing, winning a few surf fishing competitions in my mid 20’s, then taking to ’yak fishing in my mid 30’s. Through my ’yak, I’ve found yet another aspect of fishing to be passionate about.

I opened my own tackle shop in 2013, as well as starting a fishing TV show with Chris Monier & Jesse Hommelhoff, called Oz Fish TV. Our show is made for the everyday angler, taking in the beach, piers, boats and—of course—Native Watercraft kayaks.

Kendall Soo wins Round 10 of the ABT Kayak Bream Series in his Native Watercraft Slayer.

Kendall Soo

My name’s Kendall Soo. My friends know me as “Ken Doll”… yes as in Barbie and Ken. Growing up in PNG my passion for fishing started off as a youngster chasing black bass, mangrove jacks and pelagics around the pristine waters of New Guinea. Being out in the fresh air and being able to switch off from the world, I knew straight away fishing was something I would love doing.

I have been tournament fishing since 2006 and after being introduced to kayak fishing in recent times. The kayak fishing bug has been too strong to ignore and these days, I find myself competing in kayak bream tournaments against some of Australia’s best anglers in my Native Watercraft Slayer 10.

James Howarth with a nice clutch of native watercraft-caught bream

James Howarth

Brisbane, QLD

Like most anglers, my passion for fishing started at a very young age. When I was about four, my dad would take me out in Port Phillip Bay chasing ‘pinkies’. We would spend nights in the boat which was great fun at a young age, fishing all night.

It wasn’t until I had moved to Brisbane and was about 12 years old though that I really started getting into lure fishing. I’d spend every afternoon watching fishing videos and reading fishing articles, then try to sneak down to the local creeks to chase flathead and bream. Pretty much from then on it’s been fishing for me. I live and breathe everything to do with fishing.

What do I like about it? “Like” is an understatement! I LOVE everything to do with fishing. Even when I’m just at work for insistence, just being around fishing gear and people who have the same passion as me gets my casting arm itchin’.

Todd Young with a nice bass caught from his native watercraft mariner 12.5

Todd Young

Grose Vale, NSW

I have been fishing out of kayaks since I was a kid (roughly 30 yrs).  I enjoy fishing for freshwater natives with lure and flies from my Native Watercraft Mariner 12.5 Propel. I have caught many speciesfrom my ’yak, including Murray cod, golden perch, silver perch, Australian bass, yellowfin/black bream, snapper, flathead, whiting and kingfish.

Living so close to the junction of the Hawkesbury and Nepean rivers, I spend part of every spring and summer’s day chasing bass on the river.

I have held numerous Australian and fishing club records and have also been the Australian Accuracy Casting Champion competing in Spin, baitcast and fly outfits. I have fished a few tournaments from the boat over the years, including the ABT, BETS and Bass Nation Australia.

My passion for helping people to enjoy the sport I am addicted to lead me to being the owner/operator of Young Guns Fishing Adventures, which has become a very successful enterprise. My clients benefit from experience gathered as a fishing guide/instructor for over 22 years, providing fishing instruction and tuition to children and adults alike in all aspects of fishing—from the beginner to the advanced who want to learn some new tricks.

I attend fishing and camping shows around Australia, providing entertainment and fishing clinics with our sponsors gear proudly on display. I’m looking forward to representing the Australian Native Watercraft team in kayak tournaments as the years roll on.
